In this presentation, we will take a look at a cash payments journal for a service company, the cash payment journal we’ll be dealing with transactions where we have cash payments, that’s going to be the factor that will be the same for all transactions with cash payments meaning this column here cash payments will always be affected wish they kept cash payments journal cash payments journal will be used when using more of a manual system rather than an automated system. However, it’s good to know what the cash payments journal is, even if using an automated system because it’s possible that we or it’s very likely that we would need to run reports that will be similar in format to a cash payments journal. In this presentation, we’re going to talk about special journals and subsidiary ledgers. First, we’re going to list out the special journals and talk about when we would use them, why we would use them and how they fit into the accounting system. The special journals are basically going to group types of transactions. So when we think about all the transactions that happened during the month, we typically see them in order of when they happen in the accounting system, we’re going to record transactions in other words, by date as they occur. But if we are able to group those transactions into special journals that can simplify the process.
Hello in this presentation we’re going to talk about adjusting entry rules. In order to talk about adjusting entry rules. We first want to distinguish what adjusting entries are from normal journal entries. Normal journal entries being those transactions we will be recording throughout the month including the payment of the utility bill pain of wages, purchasing something on account the things that the accounting department typically does. Within the adjusting process, we’re going to draw a line or head and say the adjusting department is done in a separate department or as a separate process have a separate set of rules. Some of those rules being the same as for every journal entry, some different, the adjusting process is going to adjust accounts such as prepaid insurance, depreciation, unearned revenue, those types of accounts that need to be adjusted as of the end of the time period as a financial statement date in order to make the accounts on an accrual basis as of that date.
So there’s gonna be problems later on where they’ll basically say, you know, you got to pay off something on account and you have to assume that the prior transaction took place. You got to kind of know in your mind how these things are related. So if we go through them by cycle that will help to achieve that goal. first transaction, we’re going to say purchase supplies on account. If we go through our list of questions, we’re going to say is cash affected? In this case? No, because we purchased it on account, then we’re going to ask what we’ve received, in this case supplies. So we got supplies, that is here, it’s going to be an asset. Therefore the asset is going to go up because we got more of them, then the only question is, what is the other account? It’s not a decrease to cash because we didn’t pay cash. And therefore we must be doing something somewhere else. That will be accounts payable, so accounts payable is going to increase by the same amount.
